I’m happy to share that as of November 1st, I am a Member of the Board of Directors for Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop!

If you’re not familiar, Broke Spoke is a local, non-profit bike shop that works to make sure cyclists have access to affordable bicycles, bicycle parts, and maintenance. When a rider brings a bike into the shop needing repairs, a volunteer will work on the bike and teach the rider everything that’s being done as the process unfolds, making it as much an educational opportunity as a service. Broke Spoke also accepts donated bicycles, repairs them, and sells them on the floor for very affordable prices.
Broke Spoke works to ensure that Lexington residents can move around town safely, affordably, and with dignity. Access to transportation is key to economic development, and we see in Lexington a growing recognition that car dependency is not only harming our air, our land, and our sense of community — it’s also holding people back from economic liberty. A lot needs to be done to create a Lexington that celebrates sustainable transportation, and Broke Spoke is a key component (a spoke, you might say!) in that mission by removing cost barriers to bicycle access. Removing barriers grows our cycling community, which strengthens the appetite for biking infrastructure, which makes a healthier, happier Lexington for all residents. Most importantly, removing barriers gives residents the ability to move around town and access opportunities they may have been previously locked out of.
I’m incredibly excited to join the Board and hit the ground running — or rather, hit the ground cycling! You can learn more about Broke Spoke below. You can also pop in the shop on Sundays from 1-5pm to look at our bikes, get yours fixed, and learn about volunteer opportunities!
