RUX visited Louisville!

This past weekend was my first Intensive as a Kentucky Rural Exchange Cohort Member! I knew that this would be an awesome experience, but I don’t think I was prepared for the specific ways that it was so moving. I got to experience an immersive weekend in Louisville with some of Kentucky’s finest residents who are working so hard to improve their communities. From running children’s theatres to mutual aid work, from building local farmers markets to educating in schools at all levels, from tenant organizers to working artists — and so, so much more — this year’s cohort members are truly the best this Commonwealth has to offer. And it is super intimidating to have been accepted into a stellar cast of Kentuckians, but everyone was so thoughtful and accepting and made me feel like I truly belonged. I cannot begin to thank enough the leadership for organizing and operating such a terrific experience, and my fellow cohort members for welcoming me, challenging me, and maybe most of all, goofing off with me!

Louisville is an absolutely amazing city with people working so hard to win against the challenges facing their communities. We got to learn from activists with REACT about the environmental impact of industries in Rubbertown, from the Hope Buss team about their innovative homelessness support community, from an arborist with the Olmstead Park Conservancy organization, and many more Louisvillians dedicated to improving their city. I’ve always loved Louisville – even though, as a Lexingtonian, I do not always wish the best for their sports teams! – but am leaving with so much more respect for it than I already had.

Next month: Owensboro! I’ve never been but am so thrilled to learn more about this Western Kentucky gem.
